DESCRIPTION:To commemorate #Juneteenth 2022\, Holland & Knight’s Diversity Council is hosting an informative virtual program about Negro spirituals – the soulful\, often religious songs initially used by enslaved persons to communicate with and encourage one another. \nRamona La Roche\, Ph.D.\, the Cultural Heritage Informaticist for the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center\, will moderate a discussion with Angel Refusé\, opera singer and artistic scholar\, and Randye Jones\, opera singer and music historian. SUMMARY:Must You Be Black to Sing Spirituals?
DESCRIPTION:Author and musician Randye Jones will discuss the question of whether non-Black singers–either soloists or choirs–should study and perform Negro spirituals. She will spend some time on historical concerns\, on points to consider when deciding whether to study spirituals and on some thoughts about using dialect in performance. Jones’ presentation will serve as an opportunity for attendees to participate as well—after all\, how can folks talk about singing without doing some. \nThe program is free and open to the public.
